2020-21 was like no other fiscal year. The unrelenting impact of COVID-19 has been tremendous, and TAIBU responded to support the community in a variety of ways with community partners, through various collaborations.
NUTRITIONAL GUIDES
TAIBU CHC released its latest publication: Nutritional Guidelines for individuals living with Diabetes during Ramadan, a booklet that offers advice on nutrition needs, food sources of important nutrients, for individuals living with Diabetes during the fasting period of Ramadan.
This booklet is designed to provide people living with Diabetes some facts and advice about fasting during Ramadan. The booklet will help people with Diabetes who are fasting, understand the risks associated with fasting and provides tips for safe fasting. It also provides useful tools to help manage diabetes if one decides to fast, including sample recipes, sample meal plans and daily blood glucose tracker.
The Nutritional Guide also provides spiritual context for safe fasting.
The 34 page booklet was written by a Registered Dietitian who is a Certified Diabetes Educator.
Nutritional Guidelines for individuals living with Diabetes during Ramadan is published by TAIBU Community Health Centre which is a community led not-for-profit organization established to offer primary health care and health promotion programs to the Black community across the Greater Toronto Area. TAIBU is located in Scarborough, Ontario and also provides services to all the residents of the Malvern community.
Nutritional Guidelines for individuals living with Diabetes during Ramadan is now available and can be ordered directly from TAIBU CHC by calling (416) 644-3536 or online. Single copies are free for clients and their caregivers. Quantity discounts are available for groups or organizations.

A Guide to Nutrition for Sickle Cell Disease is a booklet that offers advice on nutrition needs, food sources of important nutrients, coping strategies and sample recipes for those living with Sickle Cell Disease.
The availability of this new client resource will be beneficial to those individuals living with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) as poor food intake and undernutrition is common in individuals living with SCD. The booklet offers advice on food sources of nutrients that are important in SCD, practical strategies for maximizing food intake during illness, general healthy eating guidelines, smart shopping tips, and sample recipes.
Designed for clients and caregivers to use on their own or with more specific advice from their health care provider, the 42 page booklet was written by a Registered Dietitian and a University of Toronto Master of Public Health candidate.
