Alomar Thorpe is currently studying at the University of Toronto Scarborough as a candidate for a Bachelor of Science degree, pursuing a double major in City Studies and Health Studies – Population Health. He also held a part-time work study position with the university’s Community Development and Engagement department for the duration of Summer 2019 as an Office Assistant.

Alomar is highly passionate about the social determinants of health and their influence on communities. He believes that engaging in community development using an asset-based approach can ultimately lead to greater health benefits for communities in general.

Growing up as child, teenager and young adult in the Jane and Finch community of Toronto, Canada is what sparked his interest in health and communities. As an individual of African Caribbean Canadian descent, his life experiences in this community were greatly impacted by his surroundings and affected his health physically, mentally and emotionally. Although adverse at times, he feels privileged to have gained the experience as a resident in Jane and Finch as it has shaped him in to the resilient person he is now and has prepared him for any challenges he may face in the future.

During his personal time, he finds joy in spending time with family, listening to music and cooking unfamiliar foods.
