Raising Awareness
About Black Mental Health Issues
Black communities often faced increased barriers in Toronto when trying to access mental health care
The need to break down the stigmas surrounding Black mental health has never been more pressing. This includes talking openly about mental health in the media, holding mental health awareness events, and providing education and support to the community.
Liben Gebremikael, Chief Executive Officer of TAIBU Community Health Centre and chair of the board of the Alliance for Healthier Communities, was recently featured on Toronto’s Breakfast Television to discuss the struggles that Black folks face when attempting to maintain their mental health and wellbeing. This includes the discrimination they experience, lack of access to services, and the negative stigma associated with mental health. Tune in to watch the clip and take action.

“We can no longer make way for promises and pledges that serves only to subside change. We must chart a bold path that re-examines stigma, inequities and social injustices.
Most importantly, a course of action that commands we work together at a pace that brings about meaningful and measurable and accountable impact.”

Chief Executive Officer, TAIBU Community Health Centre
“TAIBU continues to make way in addressing anti-Black racism and its impact on the health and wellbeing of the Black communities, Francophone and racialized populations. The Board of Directors has heard from the community, staff and volunteers what the role of TAIBU should be moving forward. We are therefore charting a bold path to continue to improve the health and wellbeing of the communities that we serve and bring about a meaningful, measurable and accountable impact”
